Search and Replace
It's time for the family newsletter again. Between now and this time last year, you got a new dog. Now you have to go through and change all instances of "Spot" to "Feebie". But 'Spot" was mentioned in almost every single paragraph! You can spend precious time reading your newsletter and painstakingly changing each name from "Spot" to "Feebie", or...
You can use a really cool time saving feature in Microsoft Word. Locate the first instance of "Spot", and hold the mouse button down while you drag it across the word. Notice how this highlights the word. Release the mouse and go up to Edit on the menu bar. Look down the menu till you see Replace. Click on that to open the Find and Replace dialogue box. See "Spot" in the Find box? Now type in "Feebie" in the Replace box. Click on Replace All. Done! You have just saved yourself oodles of time.
Finding Lost Files
Not as dramatic a title as "Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark", but hey! We all have lost files at some time or other. Take that recent download you just did off the 'net. It was this really cool screensaver of a horse galloping through meadows and along lakes and through forests. But you can't for the life of you remember where you saved it! Never fear, for Start/Find is here!
Start/who??? Okay, I'll back up a bit. We're going to find that trusty file of yours. First go down to start on your taskbar, then click on Find or Search in the start menu there. A menu will be displayed in older versions of Windows, and a search dialogue box will show up in newer versions of Windows. Choose Find Files or Folders from the list. A window now displays a place to type in the name of the file you're trying to find. Don't remember its full name? That's okay, just put a * before or after the part you don't remember. Make sure the Look In box says C:\ Drive, and click Find Now. Look! There it is! See the path name beside it? C:\windows\temp (your path will be different depending on where the file was saved) Now you can double-click the file to install your screensaver. Congratulations!
